Abstract

INTRODUCTION
Schroth exercise is a remedial method of scoliosis which is not well-known to domestic clinical exercise therapists. The purpose of this study introduces an excellent exercise therapy case in which Schroth exercise was applied to an adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patient, who needed a surgical operation due to her severe curvature of spine.
METHOD
This study applied Schroth exercise for 12 weeks to a 13 year old female scoliosis patient who was an outpatient of B hospital in Seoul. The patient of this study was one who had high possibility of gradual increase in the magnitude of curvature of scoliosis and had a big curve in her thoracic vertebrae and was in Tanner 2, Risser 3 as a physically immature level. When she first came to the hospital, she had thoracic 45.8°, lumbar 30.5° of Cobb's angle with a surgical operation recommended. This study set up the slope of thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, Cobb's angle, shoulder slope and the difference in pelvis' height as measure variations. The slope of thoracic and lumbar vertebrae was measured by scoliometer in Adams forward bending position. Cobb's angle, shoulder slope and the difference in pelvis' height were measured by front and back spine X-ray in the standing position.
RESULT
The angles of thoracic and lumbar vertebrae were decreased each from 17° to 11° and 9° to 7°. The Cobb's angle of thoracic vertebrae was decreased from 45.8° to 26.7°. The Cobb's angle of lumbar vertebrae was decreased from 30.5° to 19.1°. The slope of shoulder improved from 4.2° inclined to 0° after applying Schroth exercise. Also, the difference in pelvis' height improved from 3.98mm to 1.63mm.
CONCLUSION
12 weeks of Schroth exercise can improve the conditions of scoliosis and Schroth exercise is an effective method than other 2-dimensional exercise treatments. Also, it indicates that it is undesirable to apply surgical operation just because of curvature of over 40 of Cobb's.
