Abstract

INTRODUCTION
We investigate the differences of isokinetic strength of knee and lumbar joint between the normal BMI and the high BMI groups based on body mass index in woman professional golfers.
METHOD
Forty woman professional golfers (the normal BMI group 24.07±4.31yr, 164.86±4.98cm, 21.38±1.10kg/m2; the high BMI group 24.00±5.37yr, 161.77±7.60cm, 26.24±2.75kg/m2) were recruited in this study. Isokinetic strength of knee and lumbar joint were measured using an isokinetic dynamometer (Humac Norm Testing & Rehabilitation System, Cybex, USA). BMI was assessed by a body composition analysis equipment (Inbody 720, Biospace, Korea).
RESULTS
BMI was inversely associated with peak torque % body weight of left and right knee flexor, peak torque % body weight of left and right knee extensor, and peak torque % body weight of lumbar flexor (r= -.348 to -.501, p<.05). In the group analyses, the high BMI group had significantly lower values of relative strength items of knee and lumbar than the normal BMI group (p<.05). There were no significantly differences among groups on absolute strength items of knee and lumbar.
CONCLUSION
These results suggest that BMI was inversely associated with isokinetic strength of knee and lumbar joint in woman professional golfers. The high BMI group had significantly lower values of isokinetic strength of knee and lumbar joint than the normal BMI group. Further studies utilizing other population and more subjects may confirm these results.
