Gender Difference of Blood Pressure and Cardiovascular Response during Incremental Treadmill Exercise Testing

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the different of blood pressure and cardiovascular responses in college students during incremental exercise. We studied 37 men and 16 women during exercise and recovery. Heart rate, blood pressure(BP), mean arterial pressure(MAP), cardiac output(CO), stroke volume(SV) and total peripheral resistance(TPR) were measured during every exercise stage and recovery 1,3,5 minutes. Men were expressed high SV and CO and women were expressed high BP during exercise and TPR during recovery. But BP was not significant except exercise stage 1 of DBP and MAP. There was no significant difference according to exercise intensity between men and women, but cardiovascular response was quite different. Especially, the greater variability of heart rate in women was to maintain CO that provides the flow to serve the contracting skeletal muscle during exercise. These findings suggest that the exercise prescription to regulate blood pressure was provided differently in women compared with men.
