Abstract
PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to examine if binge drinking and drinking refusal self-efficacy differ by physical activity type(team, individual sport and non physical activity) and gender.
METHOD
For this study, a total of 354 university students(191males) completed questionnaires to assess physical activity type, binge drinking, and Drinking Refusal Self-efficacy(DRSE). The data analysis was conducted using two-way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis with SPSS 20.0.
RESULT
Two-way ANOVA revealed a significant interaction effect of physical activity type and gender on binge drinking and emotional relief DRSE and main effect of physical activity type. Students who did not participate in physical activity had the highest binge drinking and the least emotional relief DRSE. Male students participating in team sport reported more binge drinking than those in individual sport, but female binge drinking was consistent across physical activity type.
CONCLUSION
The results suggest that participants in physical activity appear to do less binge drinking and more DRSE in emotional relief situation. This is the first study to examine physical activity type and gender differences on binge drinking and DRSE. The findings add to our understanding of how sport impacts on drinking behavior and self-efficacy to avoid drinking.
