Abstract |
PURPOSE Compression around the knee area with a functional elastic stocking application might results in the increasement of performance and the relief of pain. However, review of the literature revealed minimal evidence to support the use of the functional elastic stocking. The aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of functional elastic stocking application on repetition and EMG response during squats in college students. METHODS Eight healthy college males participated and participants were measured squat 1-RM and 10-RM. Subjects performed 1-RM and 10-RM in non-application of functional elastic stocking and Stocking Max-RM of 1-RM and Stocking Max-RM of 10-RM in wearing of functional elastic stocking. Repetition and RMS(root mean square) of tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius, rectus femoris and biceps femoris during squats were compared using one-way repeated measures ANOVA. RESULTS The repetition of Stocking Max-RM of 1-RM was increased 140%(p<.05) and RMS responses were significant difference among Non-Stocking 1-RM, Stocking 1-RM and Stocking Max-RM of 1-RM(p<.01). The repetition of Stocking Max-RM of 10-RM was increased 24%(p<.05) and the RMS responses were significant difference among non-stocking 10-RM, Stocking 10-RM and Stocking Max-RM of 10-RM(p<.05). RMS of Non-stocking 10-RM was higher 19.1%, and that of Stocking Max-RM of 10-RM was higher 29.8% than that of Stocking 10-RM. CONCLUSION The application of functional elastic stocking was increased repetition both 1-RM and 10-RM, and saved muscular activity on the same physical volume, and increased muscular activity on maximal exercise. Possible mechanism behind functional elastic stocking efficacy include stretch-shorting cycle and improved ability to tolerate greater knee extension moments. |
